A canister vacuum is an excellent option for many homes. Powerful suction is a design characteristic and they are generally easier to operate than an upright. And the good news is a few canister vacuums are available for under $100.
The reason canister vacuums are easier to operate is because the bulk of the vacuum is pulled with your whole body instead of being pushed or pulled with just your arm and wrist
Portability and store-ability are also important characteristics making a canister vacuum a smart choice for multi-floor homes and small living quarters. The canister vacuums recommended below are currently the best available priced under $100 dollars.

#4 Eureka NEN110A Whirlwind Bagless Canister Vacuum Cleaner
The Eureka NEN110A Whirlwind Canister is a Bagless, Multi-Floor vacuum that is designed to clean hard floors, area rugs, and low pile carpet.
It has so many useful features you just wouldn’t expect to find in a vacuum priced below a hundred bucks.
Suction Power
The amount of suction this vacuum produces is amazing. The motor is rated at 12 amps, which develops 1500 watts of power. That’s as much as many of the $500 canister vacuums and full-sized uprights.
The Eureka NEN110A features an integrated airflow control on the handle so you can adjust the suction for optimum performance.
Cleaning Performance
Carpet
Like most canister vacuums priced under $100, the Eureka NEN110A does not have a motorized brush roll which is necessary for cleaning medium to long pile carpet. It does an excellent job of cleaning low pile carpet and area rugs using the multi-floor brush. Be sure and adjust the suction down when vacuuming area rugs; otherwise the strong suction will lift up the rug.
Hard Floors
Because of the strong suction and the good quality multi-floor brush the Eureka NEN110A Whirlwind works about as well for cleaning hard floors as canister vacuums costing 5 times as much. It can be used on concrete, stone, tile, laminate/engineered, hardwood, and Vinyl flooring with excellent results.
Pet Hair
The Eureka NEN110A is a good choice if you have a cat or dog in the house. It cleans pet hair from all floor types with no problem.
The 2.6 liter easy-empty dust cup holds plenty of hair, dirt, fur balls and shredded pet toys. An integrated dusting tool works well for removing pet hair from furniture.
The Eureka NEN110A Whirlwind does not have any pet specific tools included however a very useful set of accessories is available for less than ten bucks that will turn the NEN110A into a pet hair monster.
Above-Floor
Unlike most canister vacuums priced under a hundred dollars, the Whirlwind comes with a metal telescoping wand that enables you to reach overhead to clean. The dusting brush works OK for its intended purpose but Eureka could have done a better job with the accessories. The optional accessories mentioned above will fully equip the NEN110A for all your above floor cleaning needs.
User Friendliness
This machine has time-saving features that include an Automatic Cord rewind and an easy-to-empty large capacity Dust Cup that means more productive cleaning.
This vacuum weighs less than 8 pounds so it’s easy to maneuver and carry up or down stairs if you home happens to be multi-level.
Filtration
The Eureka NEN110A Whirlwind utilizes cyclonic technology to separate dirt and dust from the air. Fine dust is trapped in reusable, washable filters. Although it is not HEPA rated, it does do a good job of trapping the worst allergy-causing offenders.

What to Look for When Shopping for a New Vacuum Cleaner Under $100!
Important Features and Issues You Should Consider Before You Buy!
Shopping for a new vacuum cleaner can be a frustrating undertaking. There are just so many models available to consider, it’s just hard to know what to look for to help you decide which product is the best choice.
Before you decide on which vacuum cleaner to purchase there are issues you should consider. Even though the product you choose might be bargain priced, it isn’t really a bargain unless it will satisfy your cleaning needs.
These are the main questions you should ask:
Upright vs Canister
Which Type of Vacuum Works Best, an Upright or Canister Vacuum?
Upright Vacuums: Most Upright vacuums tend to be more flexible than canister vacuums. Many are equipped with above-floor features such as a stretch hose and attachments for cleaning areas above floors. Uprights typically have a motor powered brush roll that agitates carpet pile to dig out trampled in dirt and hair. A full-sized upright can weigh as much as 22 lbs. and could present a problem if your home has multiple floors. Many of the budget upright vacuums are smaller and weigh around 12 lbs. which is quite manageable for most people.
Upright vacuums are an excellent choice if your home has carpet as well as hard floors, especially if you are a pet owner that sheds hair.
Canister Vacuums: A Canister vacuum is easier to maneuver because the operator only has to manage the weight of the wand and floor brush. The bulk of the machine is pulled along with your whole body weight instead of your arm and wrist. Canister vacuums tend to be more powerful than an upright and are hard to beat when it comes to cleaning hardwood floors. Most canister vacuums priced below $100 do not have a motorized floor brush so it depends on mostly suction power to remove dirt and dust from floors. That’s why a canister vacuum is a smart choice if your home has mostly hard floors, area rugs, and low pile carpet.
Bagged vs Bagless
Which is Best, a Bagged Vacuum or a Bagless Vacuum?
Bagged: Bagged vacuums utilize a removable/disposable bag to trap the dirt it picks up. The advantages of this type of collection system are less frequent interruptions while cleaning to dispose of the dirt. Also, removing and discarding a bag is more hygienic than a bagless vacuum. The downside is that is you over fill the bag it could detach from the housing, causing dust and dirt to spew into the room. Also, replacement bags add to the operating costs.
Bagless: Bagless vacuums are more convenient to dispose of the dirt, although not as hygienic as a bag. Even when you place the dust cup down into a trash can it still produces somewhat of a dust cloud when you release the trap door. Unlike with a bagged vacuum, if you overfill the dust cup beyond the recommended capacity it begins to reduce the suction power. Also, bagless vacuums are generally not as powerful as a bagged vacuum because of the air flow resistance caused by the cyclonic components inside the dust cup. A big advantage of a bagless vacuum is they are cheaper to operate because there are no bags to buy.
Corded vs Cordless
Which is the Best Choice, a Corded Vacuum or a Cordless Vacuum?
Corded: Corded vacuums are more powerful and have greater cleaning and dirt holding capacity than a cordless vacuum. A corded vacuum will run uninterrupted while plugged into a 120V wall receptacle. A corded vacuum is the best option for deep cleaning carpeting and for cleaning a large house.
Cordless: A cordless vacuum is more convenient for light cleaning tasks because you don’t have to deal with a cord. They are wonderful for light or grab-n-go cleaning jobs. The downside to a cordless vacuum is that their runtime is limited and the battery must be recharged, usually after about 20 minutes of normal operation. Another limiting factor is their dust cups only hold a fraction of a corded vacuum and must be emptied regularly. A cordless vacuum is a good choice for light or maintenance cleaning of a small to medium size home. NOTE: At this time, even the most modestly priced cordless vacuum is priced above $150. Anything priced below that most likely a waste of money. That’s why this guide doesn’t offer any cordless vacuum recommendations. SEE: Best Cordless Vacuums for Hardwood floors.
Suction Power
How Important is Suction Power?
The amount of suction a vacuum cleaner produces at the floor brush is one of the most important factors for removing deep down dirt from carpet as well as area rugs. The more suction, the better the cleaning potential. However, suction is not the only factor necessary to deep clean carpet. Mechanical agitation provided by a motor-powered spinning brush is just as important to dig loose embedded dirt and hair so the suction so it can be lifted up by the suction.
The amount of suction is determined by the Wattage of the main motor. The larger the motor the more wattage it produces and the more expensive the motor. The actual suction is measured in Air Watts (AW) and is determined by placing a meter at the nozzle or at the end of the hose. Most vacuum cleaner experts agree that a minimum of 150AWs are necessary for good cleaning performance.
Many of the best budget vacuums are equipped with motors that produce at least 150AW of suction.
Filtration
How Important is Filtration when Selecting an Inexpensive Vacuum Cleaner?
Of all the features you should be concerned about when choosing a vacuum cleaner, none is more important as the filtration system. The dirt and dust that settles on your floors and other areas of your home can trigger an allergic attack if they are breathed into your body. Particles like pollen, dust mites, dust mite feces, mold spores can actually be damaging to your lungs.
In One Hole and Out the Other!
Every vacuum cleaner, from the cheapest to the most expensive have this in common: A suction air intake port (usually the floor nozzle or a hose) and an exhaust port. Or, stated another way, the air goes in one hole and out the other.
When you operate your vacuum it picks up all these nasty dust particles and propels them through a system of tunnels. The larger ones are captured in a bag or dust cup because of gravity. But the tiniest ones can bypass the bag or dust cup if there isn’t an adequate filter to arrest them, spewing them back into the air you breathe through the exhaust port.
A Sealed Filtration System is Important!
That’s why its important that your vacuum cleaner has an air channel system free from leaks or gaps around the filter. This is called a Sealed Filtration System and is generally found on the more expensive vacuums. However, because of improved manufacturing methods some budget vacuums now have sealed filtration systems.
A HEPA Filter is a good feature to have but its not a guarantee those harmful particulates will be trapped. HEPA media will capture particulates down to 0.03 microns which is wonderful. But, a HEPA filter isn’t very effective if a significant percentage of the nasty dust particles leak around it.
The good news is those dangerous particulates mentioned above are much larger than 0.03 microns and can be trapped in a good sponge or paper media filter in a sealed system. If you are one of the many persons who suffers with respiratory ailments, be sure to select a vacuum cleaner with a Sealed Filtration System and preferably with a HEPA Filter as well. Carpet and Hard Floor Cleaning Performance
What Type of Floor is the Vacuum Recommend For?
Most homes have a combination of floor types. Although hardwood flooring has been the most popular for the last decade and a half, many homes have carpeting or a combination of both. Its important that your new vacuum cleaner is specifically designed and recommend for the type floor in your home.
Upright vacuums are the way to go if you have mostly carpet. Many of the budget vacuums priced below $100 are equipped to clean both carpet and hard and wood floors or multi-floor rated.
Canister vacuums are the smart choice if your home is mostly hard floors with area rugs and low pile carpet.
Above-Floor Cleaning
Does the Vacuum Cleaner Model have Features and Accessories to Clean Areas Above the Floor?
Dust and dirt not only find their way on to your floors, it accumulates on every exposed surface above the floor. That’s why its important to determine if the new vacuum you are considering has the necessary features and accessories to address those areas of your home such as stairs, furniture, blinds, ceiling fans, etc.
Upright Vacuum usually are equipped with a detachable stretch hose that can be uses with a wand and attachments for above-floor cleaning.
Canister Vacuums usually come with attachments that can be used instead of the floor brush for above-floor cleaning.
Customer Reviews
How Important are Customer Reviews when Shopping for a Budget Vacuum Priced Below $100?
Customer Reviews are a wonderful resource and have changed the way we shop for products. However, if they are not utilized correctly they can give an inaccurate impression of the product you are considering.
One of the problems is that some sellers and merchants utilize bogus reviews to boost their products sale potential. Many of the big online merchants state if a reviewer is actually a “verified purchaser” which is helpful.
Another problem that is common with vacuum cleaner reviews is that many vacuum cleaner models from the same brand have similar model numbers. Quite often one model may have an issue but the customer mistakenly gives their negative, or sometimes positive review to the wrong model.
Another issue to be aware of when checking reviews is many of the negative ones are a result of the customer not reading the User Guide before operating the machine. The more features a vacuum has the more likely it is for it to have at least some negative reviews because the reviewer wasn’t aware of a certain switch or control that would have made all the difference in the customer’s experience.
Most Common Source of Negative Customer Reviews
Every vacuum cleaner, whether its a $500 model or a budget model priced below $100, must be cleaned periodically and maintained or it will cease to function as designed. As dirt builds up around areas of the air channel an dirt collection apparatus, it restricts air flow which results in a loss of suction in most models. The filters can become clogged eventually blocking air flow and cause the motor to overheat and shut off. That’s why its important to familiarize yourself with the Operator Manual or User Guide before using your new vacuum cleaner.
Another common source is unrealistic expectations. Often time a customer will purchase a vacuum having not read the specifications and end up dissatisfied.
How to Analyze Customer Reviews
When analyzing customer reviews I recommend that you read a significant number for each product and from multiple merchants. Look for common complaints as well as for common accolades to determine commonalities and get a clearer picture.
Be suspicious if the product has almost all positive reviews. Many times that’s an indication of bogus reviews. However, a product with many negative reviews should also raise eyebrows.
That’s why its important to read as many reviews as your time permits.
NOTE: Before I recommend any vacuum cleaner to my customers I read and evaluate the customer reviews from multiple merchants to get the most accurate overview. I weed out the bogus ones and non-applicable ones to get the most reliable indication possible.
Vacuum Cleaner Trivia
The debut of the Hoover Model 29 in 1950 sported a price tag of $87.95. That was a whole lot of money back then! The median household income in 1957/58 was a whopping $3,641.72 or about $70 per week before taxes. Can you imagine paying more than a week’s salary for a vacuum cleaner?
How the world has changed since then! Thanks to modern manufacturing technology and cheap foreign labor, you can still purchase a decent vacuum cleaner for Under $100 dollars.
