Hoover has used their new WindTunnel Air Steerable UH 72400 to introduce their version of “Swivel Steering” and a more modern look than their older generation WindTunnel Series.
The Hoover WindTunnel Air Steerable is a good looking bagless upright and most of the Customer Reviews so far show a high level of satisfaction.
But lets take a close look at the features and performance to see if it is as good as it looks!
First off, no matter how many features and how attractive a new vacuum cleaner model might be, in the end its only as good as its suction power.
The suction power of the WindTunnel Air Steerable UH 72400 is comparable to the highest-rated Dysons. Testing has shown excellent cleaning performance on all floor surfaces including lush, deep-pile carpeting.
That positive has turned out to be a negative in a few customer reviews that complain it is difficult to push on long or deep-pile carpeting. This is a result of the powerful suction and their not being any height adjustment for the vacuum nozzle or head.
…an industry trend..
The trend in the industry is to eliminate the Manual Height Adjustment feature on some models as an obvious effort to reduce manufacturing costs. Of course they put the best possible spin on it by calling it “Auto Height Adjustment” or “Self-Adjusting.”
Don’t get me wrong, the “Self-Adjusting” head feature works out fine for some vacuum models for various reasons including wheel size and placement. But on the Hoover WindTunnel Air Steerable UH 72400 it is not a plus if you have long or deep pile carpeting.
The Self-Adjusting head works very well on medium to low pile carpet, or smooth floors with the brushroll turned off.
That said, the suction is very powerful on this vacuum and it can be easily adjusted for applications like cleaning drapes or mats.
This is a good place to mention Hoover’s WindTunnel Technology. What it amounts to is a system of channels, baffles, and chambers designed to optimize the vacuum air flow so you have balanced suction at the head. The benefit is you get more even cleaning the full width of the vacuum head nozzle. It works!
The suction is created by an 11 Amp, 1300 Watt High Performance motor. Let’s not get hung up by vacuum cleaner motor amperage like a lot of folks do. A couple decades ago the industry got into a motor amperage promotion war. They convinced the public that a vacuum cleaner just had to have a 12 amp motor for it to work well – and that anything less was just a waste of money. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth!
Motor Amperage is just one suction and cleaning performance factor. My powerful COMMERCIAL upright has a 10 amp motor and it has massive power. The fact is the Hoover WindTunnel Air Steerable UH 72400 has one of the strongest suctions of any vacuum I have reviewed!
The Pivotal Steering System works better than expected. It has a different feel than Dyson’s Ball steering but is less bulky and it allows you to tilt it back for a low profile that easily reaches under low clearance furniture.
The pivotal steering does take some getting used to but the D-shaped Handle feels comfortable in the hand. It does make maneuvering around objects significantly easier. And it does seem to reduce fatigue.
I like the Dust Cup design because it is easy to release.
Because this model was designed to be a “Lightweight” the Dust Cup is relatively small and you will find yourself having to dump it somewhat frequently if you have a large house, don’t vacuum often, and especially if you have a large pet that sheds a lot.
Hoover did a commendable job of designing the Dust Cup Dump Mechanism making it pretty easy to dump.
A button release triggers the bottom hinged lid. If you don’t over-fill the dust cup it empties easily without having to reach in with a stick like with some other bagless models. If you deal with a lot of pet hair or carpet fiber shedding you may need to get out the stick.
Quick Tip: To get the maximum performance and user-friendly performance from any new vacuum, take a few minutes to Read the Owner’s Manual!
Operation Noise Level
Another feature that caught my attention is how Quiet the Hoover WindTunnel Air Steerable UH72400 is for such a powerful vacuum!
A feature you won’t appreciate until you need it is the Clear View from the top and large opening in the Housing that gives easy access for cleaning the Brush Roll.
Hard Floor Performance
The Hoover WindTunnel Air UH72400 tested well on Hardwood Floors and other bare floor surfaces.
The On/Off Button for the brush roll makes it easy to move from carpet to bare floor. Combine that with the Rubber-like treads on the wheels to protect wood floor surfaces.
Hoover claims their “Sealed” Filtration System on the Hoover WindTunnel Air Steerable removes up to 99.97% of Allergy-Causing Particulates which is comparable with the top Allergy-Friendly recommend vacuum models.
The System consists of Two Filters: A Washable Pre Filter and a Cleanable HEPA filter. The WindTunnel Air UH72400 has one of the better filtration systems of vacuum cleaners in the $150 price range making it a good choice for Allergy Sufferers.
The 30 Foot Power Cord is just the right length to allow you to vacuum most large rooms without having to stop and switch to another receptacle.
Something I have noticed is that Hoover’s Customer Service has improved significantly! Hoover has been doing a great job of monitoring Customer Reviews for any negative feedback, and making a credible effort to resolve any legitimate issues. Even to the point of making Videos to show a customer how to resolve their problem.
The 5 Year Warranty is a a good indication that Hoover has a lot of confidence in their new WindTunnel Air Steerable UH72400. (This is the equivalent warranty to Dyson and Shark.)
- 2-in-1 Crevice Tool
- Extension Wand
NOTE: The Hoover WindTunnel Air Does Not come with a Turbo Power Brush attachment for cleaning stairs, upholstery, etc., however you can Purchase one at Amazon.com for less than $15.
- One of the few legitimate customer complaints is that the Hoover WindTunnel Air does not have an Auto Cord Rewind! I agree, that would be a convenient feature to have! However, that would make it heavier and cost more.
- Another legitimate customer complaint is there are No headlights!
- The most valid customer complaints stem from the fact the Hoover WindTunnel Air is Somewhat Difficult to Push on plush carpet. As I mentioned above, this is the result of not having a Manually Adjustable Brush Roll height Setting to be able to set the Vacuum Nozzle high enough above the carpet to prevent it from sucking itself into the carpet.
Because of this last issue I do not recommend this vacuum if you have a lot of deep, long, or plush pile carpeting in your home!
Other than those issues I mentioned above I find the Hoover WindTunnel Air Steerable UH72400 lives up to its promise to be “a Powerful Lightweight vacuum with whole-house cleaning capabilities at a modest price.”
It does well as a pet hair vacuum except on deep pile carpet.
The overall cleaning performance is excellent. Usability is good with a few minor issues that take some getting used to. The build quality is about average for a vacuum cleaner in this price range. I think the 5 Year Warranty is a “Deal Maker” for this vacuum.
The pricing makes this vacuum a Good Value!
The compact size and quiet operation make the Hoover WindTunnel Air Steerable UH72400 is an especially good option if you live in a small to medium size home, condo, or apartment.
